We work like this: as vacancies come up, the school will ring me and tell me they need a teacher of, for the sake of argument, history. I'll then fire out an email to everyone on my mailing list to tell you "This week we're looking for a history teacher, an art teacher, and a chemistry teacher". If you're a history teacher, you'll reply to my email saying "tell me more" and I'll pass your details onto my colleagues in the school for them to contact you. Sometimes the schools will also have their own advertisements running as well as going through me, but often they won't so go through me to be put in touch with the person managing recruitment for that particular vacancy.
The first jobs usually appear on my radar around Christmas, and peak season is March to May so you'll probably hear from me fairly regularly from February onwards!
